My R Value Graph
May 1st, 2006When I read TraderMike’s outstanding post on his path to 100R, I knew I wanted to add support for those graphs into StockTickr. (Hat tips to various posts out there that share there graphs and or stats as well: TraderEyal, Ugly, and Humble Money – if there are others out there feel free to leave a comment.)
I’ve added support for these graphs and allowed StockTickr Pro users to share them if they choose. I’ve shared mine and here it is. You can filter by timeframe, trade type (long or short), winners or losers, and by the tags you use when you add stocks to StockTickr.
Here is some analysis of my trading. Here’s the link if you want to slice and dice the data and give me suggestions: http://www.stocktickr.com/report/totalr/davemabe/.
- I’ve made a little over 30R since I started tracking my trades this way in December 2005.
- My expectancy is pretty good at 0.96, but my strategy doesn’t allow me to trade nearly as often as TraderMike and others.
- I still have 3 trades open and I’ve taken 32 trades since I’ve started tracking them.
- Thanks goodness for 20R trades! Basically two trades have made my entire year so far (IVAC at 20R and NICH at 9R).
- My worst trade was -2.37R (it was AIRM) which I violated my rules and didn’t place a protective stop until it was too late. This seems to be a recurring theme in the R analysis I’ve recently seen.
- Somehow, I managed to lose 1.24R on ERS when I entered at 18. I’ve got to be the only trader the world that found a way to do that with ERS on the long side. If I entered that trade differently, I’d have another double digit R gain (it’s been as high as 49.6).
- It’s nice to be wrong 60% of the time and still make a decent return.
- Although I’ve made a little money on the short side, it’s something I need to work on.
- When I enter trades using my fundamental/technical strategy, I tag them with “Good EPS”. That strategy has done pretty well, but it doesn’t allow me to make very many trades.
- I paid $582 in commissions. I’ve never really totalled that number up until now – actually seeing that number really hits home.

[...] Up until the downturn in May of this year, this system was working great. It turned out to be the kind of system that has a low win rate (30 – 35%), but has a few very large R multiple winners that make your year. At one point I was sitting on a 30R winner and two other double digit winners. Here is one of my posts from May 1st just before the downturn. My expectancy was over 1.0 for most of the year before May. If I had to pick a StockTickr user whose system seems similar it would be alibawla. I don’t know all the details about his system, but he was posting many similar stocks as I was. [...]
