Couple R To Finish April, ATS Trades Slipped Up

April 30th, 2008

It took almost all day for the trades I took to finally turn profitable, but it happened in the late afternoon. I ended the day up a couple R for my discretionary trades. My automated trades are getting slammed by slippage. I’m not going back to the drawing board yet, but I’ll need to take a closer look at some of these trades.

I finished up April up 32R for my discretionary trades and down some for my automated trades. Overall, my best month ever by far.

Here’s some trades I took today:

PNRA

VPRT

My manual trading lost money today while my automated strategies made a little which is the opposite of what’s been happening lately. I traded LEA a couple times (didn’t learn my lesson the first time) and TXRH which stopped out. I hope we can finish strong this month which has turned out to be a great month.

It was pure luck, but I increased my R size today and had my best day ever in terms of R. I always plan on the opposite, so it’s nice when this happens.

I’ve heard from several folks for me to share more about my automated trading system and I’m working on a post now that tells more about it. It stunk up the place today, but the software did its job perfectly. The strategies I’m trading are very, very short term compared to what I’m used to and the slippage can be downright nasty. For now I’m content to continue to trade small in my ATS and gather more data. It’s more important to me now to get the software rock solid and work on refining the strategies as I go. It was down around 6R or so today before I cried uncle - at least 3R of that was in slippage. ;-(

I traded TSFG, MOLX, TUP, CERN for winners and JAKK and IVGN were losers. No time to post charts.

I took a couple days off of blogging and that quickly turned into a week. It’s nice to do that every now and then.

Boring day today. I took one manual trade in AMLN which ended up +1.2R or so. My automated strategies are evolving these days. The strategy I have been trading isn’t producing the number of signals that I did in December through mid-March, so it’s hard to get a handle on things when there’s no performance to measure. ;-)

I’ve branched out into several new strategies which give (many) more signals. I’m trading small still and trading these new strategies mainly to test the software I’ve written. I’m still finding some minor bugs to squash, which is good - the bugs continue to get more and more minor. ;-)

Here’s the chart from AMLN today:

Still tweaking the automated trading system. Just took one trade which was a loser. I found and squashed a bug or two.

Yesterday was another bad day, but today was very nice having caught IKN off the 2nd 10 minute candle for 5.6R:

    IKN

I also traded AMGN for a loss and ROST for a minor win. Yesterday was almost as bad as the other day, but that’s ok. I don’t have time to post charts for yesterday, but I traded SPR, UPS, BA, AMAG, and KMB (in that order).

I took a couple discretionary trades yesterday which ended up going nowhere. Quite the boring day. I’m continuing to make some nice improvements to my automated trading software that will allow a lot more flexibility. I’ll easily be able to add new strategies to the bot and have it trade them without any coding.

Here are my discretionary trades for yesterday:

The first was MSM which stopped out for a 1R loss:

    MSM

The second was GRMN which did basically nothing the entire day. (+.4R)

You could sort of guess that just a couple days after my best day ever, I’d have my worst day ever. ;-)

As long as my best days far outpace my worst days, that’s perfectly ok with me (as long as the best days are more frequent!)

I traded UST, CHRD, TSL, and BLUD. At least CHRD showed some signs of life for most of the day before stopping out, but that’s not saying much.

    No automated trades today, unfortunately.

Here are the charts. If you’ve eaten very recently, I’d suggest closing your eyes - you might vomit.

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen such a strong day in the markets. My automated trading system didn’t do as well as Ugly’s did yesterday or today, but it did pretty well at +3R. Decent day on the discretionary side where I traded SNDK and HANS.

I was just barely stopped out of HANS early on only to see it go up and finish strong the rest of the day. Maybe I should pull my stop next time. ;-)

    Here are the charts.
