Boring Start To Month, Progress on Automated Trading

May 1st, 2008

It seemed like there was a ton of candidates today but very few setups. I made 3 trades, 1 worked out (HOLX). I also felt like I made some headway on the automated trading front. I’ve been throwing a bunch of strategies at the wall and seeing which ones stick. There are a couple that seem to be rising to the top. We’ll see!

Also, it’s rare that I look at the daily chart of the Qs, but I happened to glance at it today. It’s looking pretty good – spitting distance from breakeven for the year it seems:

QQQQ

Here are my trades for the day.

Good to hear your ATS work is developing. I’ve been struggling to code an ATS in NinjaTrader and progress is difficult. The environment is good but it’s not a trivial task translating trading concepts into code. Congrats on getting so far.

Thanks for the comment, Tyro. NinjaTrader is nice, but I found it too limiting for what I was trying to do.

Also, I’ve live traded at least 5-6 strategies so far. It would have taken probably 10 times as much time and work to code them all in Ninjascript – probably more.

What sort of limitations were you encountering?

I’m finding it a huge amount of work but it’s still better than any of the alternatives I’ve looked at. Maybe my strategy is more difficult than it needs to be. Knowing which path to take and which tools to use are hugely underrated skills!

Well, with the way I’ve set up my bot I’ve coded once and now I can add an unlimited number of strategies without writing a single additional line of code.

So from the time I think of a new strategy that I want to explore, I can go from the concept to testing to live trading within 20 minutes – sooner if the strategy doesn’t require much tweaking (usually does, though. 😉 )

Trade-Ideas & OddsMaker? Sounds like a good example of one of those “knowing a better path” issues 🙂

I think it’s great that money goes to the smart & clever, not necessarily the hard-working. I just prefer to be on the other side!

Good luck for May, and thanks for keeping us up-to-date.
