Survey: Is it “Automated”, “Algorithmic”, or “Systems” Trading?
December 8th, 2008I’m interested to hear what you think about this controversy. When referring to a framework where a computer initiates and manages trades without human intervention – what phrase do you think best describes that concept?
- Automated Trading
- Algorithmic Trading
- Systems Trading
- Program Trading (added thanks to Drew’s comment below)
What phrase would you say most people use? I’ve got my own thoughts on the subject that I’ll write up in a future post, but first I’d like to get your thoughts?
Which one is best and why? And which phrase do you think is most popular?

I would tend to lean towards: Algorithmic Trading
The reason being, is that with my strats, I’m detecting other algo movements and placing stat prob on those algos repeating what they’ve done in the past.

Automated trading seems the most descriptive. Algorithmic and systems trading could still mean manual trading but utilizing a ’system’ or algorithm to generate the signals. Program trading sounds like 80’s terminology. The other terminology issue is whether to use strategy or model.
